Usage Based Billing (Mediation and Rating)

Usage based billing enables you to define chargeable costs based on consumption of your billable resources.

For Example:

  • A data center operator may charge for storage and network bandwidth consumed.
  • A health club may change for training sessions and per-use fees for racquet ball courts
  • Phone companies have complex usage-charges based on call duration, source and destination numbers (long distance charges), time of day (night and weekends may be charged differently from peak times), etc.

Orders that have one or more usage-based charges can have “usage activity” data uploaded into the system on a periodic basis.


When one or more plans have an associated “usage charge”, a periodic data feed (typically daily) is used to provide usage activity to the billing system. This information can also be imported from a csv file. This can either be accomplished via system integration or may be manually imported into the system by uploading a CSV file via the web pages. (CSV files are Comma Separated Value files that may be created with any spreadsheet application such as Microsoft Excel). For system integration, refer to the developer’s integration guide for documentation on using web-service APIs or automated file transfers. The mediation and rating process permits the billing system to translate from raw usage units into billing costs that can be invoiced.
